WHATWEDID2020

YEAR: 2020 | ROLE: BRANDING, GRAPHIC DESIGN & SOCIAL MEDIA | CLIENT: COLLABORATIVE + SELF

@WHATWEDID2020 was a self-initiated collaborative project. It's purpose was to provide an accessible digital space where people on Instagram could connect and share their one win (big or small) from the COVID19 pandemic lockdown. The aim was to allow collaborators to reflect, share, connect, and feel good about themselves.

Emotion in Design

During the pandemic lock-down, there were often days where I felt hopeless and disconnected. To combat these negative emotions, I began practicing mindfulness. It made me focus on what I could control, and reflect on what I achieved during the lock-down period. This practice then led to the birth of WhatWeDid2020.

WWD Identity

Bringing the Idea to Life

The project is personal for everyone contributing to it, so it was crucial that all submissions were handwritten, then scanned and uploaded. This was also an opportunity for people to have fun with their submissions. A clean simple brand identity was created with an organic serif font that would compliment the template that the organic submissions would exist in.

How People Felt & Reflections

The project was really well received on the night it was announced. There were over 30 submissions sent over from wins like spending time with their family to building a training wall for climbing at home with a friend. A number of Instagram accounts were kind enough to share the project to their audience and encourage them to contribute. I also received heart-warming direct messages from people in my Instagram community sharing their positive feelings on @whatwedid2020 which some had resulted to meaningful conversations. Doing this project was a big leap of faith for me, as I was uncertain if people would contribute. Upon reflection, @whatwedid2020 has provided deeper insights of the people around me and connect with them.
